    Trauma Informed Care with Transition-Age Youth

    </p><p>Over 2/3 of young people have experienced at least one traumatic event by age 16. Based on these statistics, every classroom has students who have undergone trauma. Research shows chronic trauma affects students’ school performance, attendance, and behavior.&#160;<br></p><p>Understanding the emotions and normal responses that follow a traumatic event can help individuals cope with the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors as they transition into the workforce. Educators and employers can&#160;help prepare new and existing&#160;employees on how to respond to traumatic incidents to help reduce the adverse effects on their mental health. Understanding the signs, impact, and science of trauma is critical to effectively serving and supporting young adults. There are many ways educators can help; we will overview evidence-supported, trauma-informed practices that can be used to create trauma-informed learning environments. Becoming trauma-informed has the potential to reshape relationships we have with our youth and young adults, change our own perceptions of their behaviors, and rewrite the policies that guide organizational practices.<br></p><div><p>
